Introduction to New Zealand
New Zealand is a vibrant island country in the South Pacific. The mild and comfortable climate, magnificent and grand mountains, lush forests, glaciers, and amazing wildlife make New Zealand paradise. Besides the spectacular natural surroundings, New Zealand has an additional cultural treasure, the Kiwi people. Their kindness, friendliness, and openness will surely impress you.
 
New Zealand has a population of 3.8 million. The inhabitants are mainly British and Maori descendants. The Maoris immigrated to New Zealand almost 700 years ago and the Western influence comes from the expansion of the British Empire. It is primarily a European culture that has absorbed many of the rich and historic cultural elements from the Maori and Pacific Island heritages.
 
New Zealand is well known for its friendly people, steadfast political and economic situation, and untainted physical surroundings. Recently New Zealand's tourism industry has blossomed. Consequently, it has started to become a popular country for traveling, and there are more and more international students studying in New Zealand's educational institutions. More than 40,000 international students study in New Zealand every year, and the number of students is constantly increasing. The high educational standard, combined with a comfortable and safe lifestyle, makes New Zealand a great environment for studying abroad.

According to UNESCO, educational standards in New Zealand strongly compete with North America, Europe, and Australia. Its primary and secondary education systems are regarded as a model example to the world.

Climate and Clothing
Situated in the south hemisphere, New Zealand's seasons are opposite of those in Taiwan. Summer is between December and February and the temperature is around 24 to 30 degrees Celsius. Winters are in June, July, and August. The temperature fluctuates between the 9-15 degrees Celsius. In summertime, casual wear is sufficient. However, warm clothing for winter such as sweaters, jackets, and gloves are highly recommended.
Shopping
New Zealand has a variety of international and local shops, including fashion, outdoor, clothing, and craft stores. Malls and shops are usually open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Thursday. Many of them stay open until 9:00 pm Thursday and Friday, while most stores open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays. Some stores in resorts are open on Sundays, from 11:00 am to 3:00pm. Convenience stores are open longer than regular shops, usually until 10:00 pm, and gas station convenience stores are open 24 hours.
Sports and Leisure
New Zealand has many national parks, mountains, and beautiful beaches. The country is known as the adventure sports capital of the world and provides millions of visitors and adventurers with all kinds of new experiences. This type of recreation is inexpensive and convenient. There are many outdoor sports to choose from such as skiing, golfing, scuba diving, hang gliding, surfing and mountaineering.
 
Social and Cultural Activities
New Zealanders come from many ethnic backgrounds. There are many different ethnic communities including European, Asian and Pacific Islanders living in New Zealand. Many cultural and social gatherings are held that honor these heritages. New Zealand also has a strong Maori presence and you will find unique Maori traditional arts and crafts shops in New Zealand. Also, the music in New Zealand is gaining exposure around the world. Five professional orchestras perform frequently and the New Zealand Symphony orchestra tours throughout the country, as well as overseas.
Cities
Auckland - Auckland is the biggest city in New Zealand with a population of one million. It is a blend of islands, Polynesian culture, and glistening harbors. This modern city environment creates an unbelievable lifestyle ranked amongst the best in the world by international surveys. It also earned the name ‘The City of Sails' because there are countless yachts and ferries docked in the Hauraki Gulf.
Christchurch - Christchurch is located on the Canterbury Plains, on the East Coast of the South Island. The city is characterized as an English city because of its Victorian era architecture. It is also known as ‘The Garden City' thanks to its beautiful parks and public gardens. There is something different to see and do within a short drive in any direction of Christchurch. You may visit the ocean on the Banks Peninsula, featuring sheltered bays and wonderful sandy beaches. A one-hour drive takes you to the key peninsula attraction - the French settler's harbor village of Akaroa. Or go to the tallest mountains, the Southern Alps, and hike along the numerous paths or enjoy skiing on the beautiful mountain slopes.
