Introduction to Australia
Australia is situated between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It is the sixth largest country in the world. This country is full of blue skies and glistening golden beaches - you will not find a place like it. Australia is a popular year-round travel destination. You can see vast deserts, the unique Great Barrier Reef, diverse wildlife, as well as Sydney, voted the world's best city. You can find foods from all over the world.
 
Starting in the seventeenth century, British and Irish immigrants and convicts moved to Australia and built their own federal government. After the Second World War, Australia received 500,000 immigrants who helped facilitate the growth of the economy and industry. Nowadays, the transportation and public facilities have reached the world standard and has a very low crime rate.
 
In the past few years, Australia has become one of the main locations for studying abroad, especially
for Asian students. 30% of Australia's population comes from 100 different countries. With such a multicultural environment, it openly welcomes international students. Therefore, the number of international students continues to grow steadily.
 
Reasons to study
1. Government-certified education
Australia's primary and secondary organizations, universities, graduate schools and language schools must pass a strict governmental examination that allows them to recruit international students.
3. International student services
Australia's institutions are concerned with the needs of the international student. They provide counselingservices and information about living in Australia. It is also legal to work in Australia and you may apply for residency after finishing your studies.
2. A wide choice
Educational opportunities are wide open for international students. You have the choice of studying in English language schools, secondary schools, universities, or in private training institutes.
4. Proximity to Taiwan
Taiwan is very close to Australia compared to other English speaking countries. Flights are much shorter than those to Europe. The time difference is between 0-3 hours, it's convenient to contact your family and friends without worrying about the time difference.
5. Reasonable tuition fees and expenses
The government subsidizes Australia's universities; therefore, tuition fees are reasonable. Expenses are also cheaper than in other English speaking countries.
Climate and Clothing
Australia is famous for its great weather with a wide range of climates. With the opposite seasons of the northern hemisphere, summers are between December and February. The average temperature in the north is 29 degrees Celsius. However, the average temperature in the south is much lower. It is around 17 degrees Celsius and jackets would be necessary to bring wherever you went. Winters start from June and the temperature varies from area to area. In northern Australia, the average temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius. It snows in the Australian Alps between June and September, so warm clothing is recommended.
 
Most of Australia receives more than 3,000 hours of sun each year. That means that you will feel the warm sunshine over 70 per cent of your time in Australia! It's better to wear sunglasses and hats when outdoors. Remember to apply sunscreen rated above SPF15 and avoid overexposure of the sun between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.
Shopping
Stores are usually open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. There are also pubs, convenience stores, supermarkets, bookstores and shopping malls open 24 hours every day. The stores in the resorts of Queensland are open until 8:00 pm. Australia is very different from Taiwan and the stores close earlier on weekends.
Sports and Leisure
The Australian environment is unique with sunny weather and various landscapes that make Australians lovers of outdoor activities. Australians take advantage of their surroundings and enjoy many different kinds of activities, such as hiking, canoeing, mountain climbing, as well as many exciting water activities. People are also crazy about rugby, the Ironman triathlon, and cricket.
Social and Cultural Events
Australians love life and it shows in their culture. Whether spending time appreciating the arts or exploring the great outdoors, leisure time is an important aspect of Australian life. Their multicultural diversity has also influenced their culture, from Chinese New Year to the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
Cities
Sydney - Though Sydney is not the capital of Australia, it is the most significant city in politics and economics. It has a population of 4 million and it is still increasing. The downtown area located next to Port Jackson is a well-planned metropolis and the beaches surrounding the port provide a nice place to relax. You will find there are amazing activities in the suburbs of Sydney. As most people know, Sydney hosted the 2000 Olympic games, which helped it become a very visible international city.
Melbourne - Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia and has a populationof 3.2 million. It is an elegant and Europeanized city and has a lot of beautiful parks, cafés, and bookstores. Population Action International selected Melbourne as 'The World's Best City' because of the well organized metro network and convenient public facilities.
