5 theme based courses target specific areas of English that students will improve in

Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension accounts for 35% of the General English Proficiency Test, GEPT, and 60% of the Basic Competency Test for Junior High School Students. The initial reading course, Telling Tales, is for Grade Four and over students who have learned English for more than one and a half years. HESS English Reading Club is a continuation of Telling Tales. It is for students who have learned English
for more than two years. We use world-famous literature such as Harry Potter or Baudelaire as material and teach students to read English books systematically. These classes improve their reading comprehension while capturing their imaginations.
Fun with Grammar
Writing accounts for 17% of the GEPT. Grammar is fundamental in writing correct English. To better prepare our students for this section of the GEPT we focus on writing essays, conversation and grammar. There are three courses—Beginners', Grammar One and Grammar Two for elementary students in Grades Four to Six with less than one, more than one and over two years English learning respectively.
Speech & Writing
Small classes instructed by native speaking teachers focus on teaching speech and writing skills. These include composition, using synonyms, creative writing, essay writing, speech techniques and on-stage performance. This course is intended to help students prepare for the HESS National Youth Speech & Writing Competition. Students who pass the quarter-final round of the competition will get free one-on-one tuition from both Chinese and native speaking teachers. There are three courses, Basic, Practical and Advanced for elementary school students Grade Four and above.
Listening Comprehension
The size of a student's vocabulary often determines how good they are at listening comprehension. In this course, we use interesting English stories, supplemental vocabulary and practice listening skills and comprehension techniques. Listening comprehension makes up 30% of the GEPT. We give our students an advantage in this section of the test by using similar questions to practice and analyze in class. There are three courses, Basic, Practical and Advanced for elementary school students Grade Four and above who have learned English for one, one and a half and two years respectively.
Pronunciation & Conversation
Speaking skills account for 18% of the GEPT. These courses will help students succeed in this section of the test. Our English Pronunciation course gives elementary Grade Three and Four students (with more than six months English learning) a good foundation in phonics and KK. Our Conversation courses are fun interactive total immersion classes.
The topics and activities are relevant to the students' lives, motivating them to be active speakers. There are three courses, English Conversation One, Two and Three for elementary students in Grades Four to Six with less than one, more than one and over two years English learning respectively.
