2004 was the first year HESS held area recitation competitions for Step Ahead level five to eight students. The purpose of this event is to better prepare children for the Speech and Writing Competition in the future.
Although students have the opportunity to practice on a demonstration script, they only see the actual reading they will deliver 10 minutes before they must perform. In that time they have to decide how to pronounce the words, know where they should pause, choose appropri-ate gestures, understand the text in order to use the correct expression and get their timing right!
Students are judged on pronunciation, intonation, fluency, presentation, gestures, time control and confidence. Facing the challenge of performing in public helps younger students hone their presentation skills and build their self-esteem. This public reading performance is an excellent stepping-stone to the HESS Speech and Writing Competition.
