Changhua is 16 kilometers (10 miles) south west of Taichung and takes about 20 minutes by train. Although it is a city of 200,000 people, it is slower-paced and much less westernized than most other areas in Taiwan.

Most teachers in this area share apartments. The living costs in Changhua are lower than in the larger cities, so most teachers find they can save more money here.

 
Most things within the city can be reached by bicycle, however those teachers wishing to explore the surrounding areas will often buy a motorbike or scooter. There are some local buses running to nearby towns and the north-south train line stops in Changhua.

The Buddha is perched on a pedestal adding another 4.3 meters (14 feet). Visitors can climb the stairs inside the 86 foot high statute and look out of the Buddha's eyes to enjoy the view of the city.
 
On the social side, there are two pubs in Changhua where many teachers will hang out, while others will go to the bowling alley or one of the two movie theaters. Coffee shops and tea houses are plentiful here. Taichung is only 20 minutes away, and offers a wider variety of entertainment.
