Their daughter Lara, also a teacher in Canada, spent 2 years at Hess in Taiwan. Both Pat and Dale have been teachers, Vice Principals and Principals of schools in Canada. Here’s their take on Taiwan and us…
We are both retired educators. We brought our children up to have “roots and wings”, but when our daughter decided to try those wings to teach in Taiwan our beliefs were put to the test.
We were, initially, worried, because what did we know of Taiwan? But all our worries disappeared as we “talked” to Lara more often via the internet than we did when she lived 18 km away from us. She very quickly met some wonderful people and has made lasting friendships with many of her co-workers. Hess presented Lara with many opportunities to stretch herself, to grow, to set goals and to live to her potentials.
What wonderful things for parents to witness! We become so fascinated with her life in Taiwan and with Hess that we decided to travel and visit with her in her new environment. The first impression, and one that still remains with us, is what a safe place Taiwan is. The parents of the Taiwanese children that are daughter taught were friendly and so appreciative of what Lara was doing with their children. Her co-workers, both those from Taiwan and from other corners of the world, were terrific and so supportive, as was the supervisory staff of Hess.
The experience for Lara was so amazing and so rewarding that we have recommended this opportunity to others. We have nothing but praise for Hess and for the care, the opportunities and the supportive environment they provide for their teachers. We both wish that opportunities such as this had been available when we were young.
