During the late Ching dynasty, San Cheong developed
into a lively town as boats started to steer between
the two banks of the Tamshui River, connecting Taipei
with the west of Taiwan, and the flow of traffic between
Taipei and mainland China increased.
In the year 15 of Emperor Kuang Hsu of the Ching dynasty
(1983 AD), Liu Min-Chuan built a wooden bridge across
the Tamshui River, connecting San Cheong Pu and the Taitaocheng
area (today’s Yanping and Taitung district) of Taipei
City. In 1925 they replaced the wooden bridge by an iron
bridge and named it the Taipei Bridge. Parts of the wooden
bridge can still be seen under the western side of the
Taipei Bridge.
After the construction of Taipei Bridge, San Cheong
became more and more prosperous. Because of its proximity
and accessibility to Taipei City the industry grew with
factories and shops opening all over the area. Today
San Cheong is a big city with well-developed infrastructure,
booming industry, schools, nurseries and parks.

The city is within easy access to Taipei City via the
Taipei and Jungshing bridges. There are frequent buses
and taxi’s taking these routes. The Taipei Metro Rapid
Transit System (MRT) is under construction and would
soon connect the city with Taipei and would make commuting
much easier. However, the best transport is definitely
the scooter. Most every person in Taiwan owns a scooter.
Bring an international driver’s license with you, and
invest in a scooter as soon as possible. This gives you
the freedom to explore the mountains and beaches on Saturdays
and Sundays, only 30-minute or 40 minutes ride by scooter
away from central San Cheong.
One of San Cheong’s most popular recreation facilities
is the Riverside Park. The total length is 7.7km with
an average width of 450m. The whole area is now under
development and currently boasts three basketball courts,
six volleyball courts, six baseball courts, one football
field, a water park and a cycling track that will stretch
20km, making it the longest cycling track in Taiwan.
The city also hosts a lively and huge night market,
various restaurants, Chinese and Western, pool centers,
swimming pools, a huge spa, gyms and Ten Pin Bowling
alleys. Unfortunately watering holes are limited, but
Taipei City is just a stone throw away where there are
numerous pubs and clubs that cater to everyone’s taste.
Accommodation in San Cheong is cheap but limited to
low and medium-rise buildings. Most buildings are relatively
old, as San Cheong was the very first ‘suburb’ of Taipei.
Since they started with the construction of the metro,
newer buildings, mostly mid and high-rise have been going
up all over the city, but they are obviously more expensive
and compare with those in Taipei City.
Living and working in Taiwan is an awesome experience.
Teaching at San Cheong an even better experience. We
welcome all new teachers, and hope that with enough support,
your experience in Taiwan would be most rewarding. We
are looking forward in welcoming you to our family.
