Welcome to Chu Bei!! Here in Chu Bei we have two HESS branches situated quite close to each other in what is a pretty quiet and small city on the outskirts of the much bigger city of Hsin Chu. Our branches offer kindergarten and language school programs and will also soon include 'Young Scholars' and 'Jump' classes. At the time of writing, we have approximately 1000 students in our two branches and six native speaking teachers (NST’s) sharing the load.

Chu Bei City is in Hsin Chu County, and is about a 5-10 minute scooter drive from Hsin Chu City. Serving as mainly a feeder town to Hsin Chu City, Chu Bei is gradually building its own identity, particularly with the opening of the High Speed Rail Link in October 2005. Chu Bei will be the main station for the Hsin Chu area, and so is rapidly becoming a popular place to live.

Hsin Chu is home to the Science and Industry Park, an area that is the size of Hsin Chu City, where thousands of companies are making the latest

technological products. Hsin Chu’s Science Park is known as the second Silicon Valley. As a result of this, there is a strong ex-pat community here with engineers and teachers scattered all over Hsin Chu and Ju bei.

Hsin Chu boasts the largest shopping mall in South East Asia. The Windance Center (also home to another HESS branch) has everything from a huge movie theater to a gym and fitness center, and of course, shops galore. Other than this, there are many other shopping centers in and around Hsin Chu and Chu Bei, many of which provide outlets to buy western foods.

For the sporty types, there are plenty of opportunities to play a whole variety of sports here. There is a very good ex-pat football (that’s soccer for our North American friends) and rugby scene, whilst Taiwan’s favorites of basketball and baseball are played seemingly everywhere. There are also plenty of gyms and swimming pools, and whilst running in the city isn’t the easiest of past-times, we are pretty close to some beautiful countryside, ideal to get away from the city and run off your weekly stresses. Other past-times and sports that can be done here include bowling, tennis, badminton and volleyball.

Other places of interest around the area include Lee Foo Village, a very entertaining and fun amusement park, and various Hakka villages situated around this picturesque and mountainous county.

At night, ex-pats usually head into Hsin Chu City and circulate around the number of bars and restaurants there. Although these places are sure to be different from your home country, they are always good fun and live music can often be seen here. In Chu Bei, a number of western restaurants are beginning to open up with bars soon to follow.

We are also very close to the coast here, and although I wouldn't recommend swimming in the water too often, the beaches and fishing harbors offer some very nice and relaxing days out.
