Hess TEFL Certification Program
If you're not a teacher, don't panic: we can teach you how to teach. With over 20 years of developing curriculum, teaching classes and training teachers, we know a thing or two about how to teach English effectively, and we can train you in everything you need to know.

We have a set curriculum with a full range of support materials such as CDs, posters and visual aids, and classes are clearly structured. This means you don't have to spend long hours compiling materials and writing your own lesson plans. In training, you will be equipped with simple yet effective teaching methods and systems that will allow you to use these materials well and enable your students to succeed.

Teachers are awarded a TEFL certificate at the end of their first year. This encompasses Initial Training, Branch training, 1, 3, 6, and 9-month follow up trainings and a minimum of 800 hours practicum teaching. All trainings are free and mandatory.

Hess Initial TEFL Training (HITT)

Three times each year we hold a large group orientation and training program for 30 to 50 people. It is a nine-day interactive training, which prepares teachers for their year in Taiwan. We provide complimentary hotel accommodation with your fellow trainees during this time. We are very serious about developing and supporting professional teachers for our classrooms and our ongoing assessment process begins here.
We understand that moving to a new country can be just as challenging as starting a new job and that each effects the other. We include useful information about living in Taiwan, share our experiences, and make ourselves available to answer any questions you might have. During this initial training, our documents staff and your head teacher will contact you to begin the process of finding appropriate accommodation and securing your necessary visa and permits.

An important benefit of large group trainings is that teachers are quickly able to begin establishing their Taiwan social network, find future roommates, and share their experiences with people who are 'in the same boat'. We also hold a graduation party at the completion of training to allow you to meet with other teachers and Hess staff.

We are currently recruiting staff to take part in our 2013 Hess Initial TEFL Training (HITT). There are 3 main Hess trainings, which run during the year. The dates for these trainings are as follows:

1. February 17-26

2. July 22-31 / July 29-August 7 / August 19-28

3. November 11-20

At the Branch
After training, you will go to your branch. There, you will be assisted with finding your new apartment and have the opportunity to meet your new colleagues. The other people at your branch will be one of your best resources in Taiwan. It is they who will help you with the challenges of day-to-day living such as getting a phone contract or where to buy necessities.

You will also observe a few classes being taught by experienced teachers and familiarize yourself with the branch systems before you begin teaching. Your head teacher will help you with any questions you have, as well as observing your lessons on a regular basis and giving you helpful feedback and support. To help you adjust during the first month, branches strive to give new teachers a schedule that eases them into a full workload. We have all been through this ourselves, so we know it can be a little daunting – but we are there to help you every step of the way.

Follow Up Trainings
1-day follow up trainings are held for all new teachers four times in their first year. They are held after 1, 3, 6 and 9 months of teaching. A wide range of teaching and Educational Psychology topics are covered.

Training is sometimes sponsored at the branch level. This branch training is usually very specific to the needs of the teachers in a school or area.
Trainings provide a wealth of practical advice and tips from both experienced trainers and colleagues. They are also a great opportunity to see friends and share your incredible experiences as teachers and foreigners in Taiwan.
